Cristobal Balenciaga was born January 21, 1895, in Guetaria, Spain. A boyhood interest in sewing, encouraged by his mother, was turned to a source of income following his father's death. His first patron was a local aristocrat, the Marquesa de Casa Torres , who commissioned Balenciaga to make her a dress. Balenciaga is a master of illusion, envisioning the garment as a three-dimensional form. He got his inspiratione from Spanish art and vernacular costume and mixing it with his genius for illusion. It was once said, that when a woman wearing a Balenciaga gown walks into a room, there is no other woman there. Today, the brand is famous for its bags, shoes, boots, sunglasses and dresses.
