Company:

Lonsdale London

Establishment:

1960

Founder:

Bernhard Hart

Description:

Lonsdale London is founded by the ex-boxer Bernard Hart in 1960. The company is named after Hugh Cecil Lowther 5th Earl of Lonsdale who was the first to settle organised box matches with gloves. Many famous boxers have worn the brand, among them are Muhammad Ali, Sir Henry Cooper, Sugar Ray Robinson, Brian London. In the beginning Lonsdale was specialized in boxing equipment but due to its location near Carnaby Street the label became ingrained into 1960s popular fashion. Some of the celebrities who wore the brand in the 1970s were Paul McCartney, Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn and Tony Curtis. Due to Paul Weller who was wearing Lonsdale t-shirts during his tour with The Jam in Japan in 1979, the sales in England and Asia increased. In the 1990s the brand expanded to new markets in Europe and opened first shops in Australia. In the beginning of the 21st century some provocative interpretations of European Neo-Nazis led that Lonsdale was associated as a brand for right radicals. The label reacted immediately with anti-racism campaigns and events. In 2003 the “Lonsdale Loves All Colours” campaign was launched in order to demonstrate the company's anti-racist statement. Nowadays beside the production of sport apparel, the company sponsors boxers, produces football kits for Brentford, Swindon Town and Millwall, is the official clothing supplier to the Sydney Roosters Rugby League Club in Australia. We are wholesalers of Lonsdale London garments.
